YOGA GENERAL INFORMATION
The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where Yoga originated. We can think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit.
What is commonly referred to as "yoga" can be more accurately described by the Sanskrit word asana which refers to the practice of physical postures or poses.
Many people think that yoga is stretching. But, while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility.
This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement (Vinyasa-style yoga) or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose (Hatha-style yoga). The poses are a constant, but the approach to them varies depending on the tradition in which the teacher has trained.
Vinyasa is a term that covers a broad range of yoga classes. The word vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement,” in other words, the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale. This technique is sometimes also called Vinyasa Flow, or just Flow because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. This style still allows for a lot of variety, but will almost certainly include Sun Salutations.
Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. If a class is described as Hatha style, it is probably going to be slow-paced and gentle and provide a good introduction to the basic yoga poses.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Stretch and Tone Yoga
(Hatha style)
The practice of coordinating movement and breath soothes the mind, leading to inner balance and peace. This Yoga class will help you increase strength and flexibility throughout your entire body, as well as reclaiming suppleness of the spine. Instruction focuses on the developmental sequence of poses and proper body alignment. This is an ideal class for those who want to enhance their energy and vitality level in a relaxing way. Great intro class for beginners to use as a stepping stone to more advanced levels.
Vinyasa Flow Yoga
The fundamental elements of Ashtanga find themselves in this exploratory and creative style. This moderate to vigorous class weaves the rhythm of the breath with the pulse of the body moving gracefully and mindfully from posture to posture. This flowing class is accompanied by music of varying genres and offers careful and precise instructions.
Meditative Hatha Yoga
Calming class combining Hatha yoga postures, breathing and meditation exercises. This class begins with some Hatha postures held for longer periods of time to allow the body to settle and surrender (approx. 45min). Different breathing techniques will be offered to work in a controlled manner to allow the mind to find a place of peace and relaxation (10 min). Once both your body and mind have cultivated a sense of focus, we will sit together in formal meditation practice (20min). This class is ideal for those wanted to improve their concentration, calm their mind, and get a better night sleep. Come and discover the wisdom and tranquility within you.
